Growing MOFs with Ferritin proteins incorporated inside the Nano Channel Chips!

An interesting experiment was carried out in collaboration with DTU - Technical University of Denmark’s Prof. Kristian Mølhave and @UCI’s Prof. Joe Patterson.

PhD candidate Justin Mulvey visited DTU Nanolab to spend time on the TEM with Joakim Lajer and Insight Chips proudly supplied the holder and Nano Channel Chips to facilitate the research.

In this experiment, two liquids were mixed in the Nano Channel Chip. One liquid contained 2-methylimidazole (HmIm) with Ferritin proteins and the other contained Zinc Acetate (Zn(OAc)2). When HmIm and Zn(OAc)2 come into contact with one another, the MOF named ZIF-8 is created as the product. In this particular case, the solution included Ferritin protein, which was seen incorporated into the ZIF-8 crystals. Images and diffraction patterns were collected of the MOF crystals, as well as videos showing how the beam breaks down the crystals.
