Alpha

Atomic resolution in liquids +/-70 degrees alpha-tilt

Tomography and 3DED in liquids

Alpha is our solution for everything the Atomos can do plus the ability to tilt 70 degrees in the TEM*:
- Atomic resolution in liquids
- Flow and mixing of 2 different liquids+/-70 degrees tilting
- Heating up to 120 C

Alpha: Optimized for Alpha-tilt

The innovation behind Alpha lies in making the chip extra thin, and extra long...

This enables the holder to clamp the chip further down, far away from the pole piece in the TEM.

A single screw and lid clamps the holder at the base, extending the long and thin chip in between the pole piece.

There has been a patent filed for the solution.

A micro-fluiding flow system for TEM

4 flow ports

Creates two bypass systems inside the chip, which allow for fast and easy exchange of liquids, as well as mixing of two liquids directly in the field of view.

Precise thickness

15-20 nm SiN membranes
Liquid thickness anywhere from 0-5,000 nm
Bulging only ~10 nm

The four inlets of the chip are directly accessible from the backside of the holder, and liquid-flow and mixing can be done while the holder is inside the TEM, fully under vacuum.

Heat up to 120 C

The Atomos can heat the entire tip of the holder up to 120 C.

It works by attaching a PCB board with resistive heaters and placing a sensor on the tip.

An in-house made software then allows the user to set the temperature anywhere between 25 C and 120 C.

A patent has been filed for this solution.

Alpha use case: Chiral nanoparticles

Prof. Sara Bals
EMAT University of Antwerp

Prof. Sara Bals from EMAT in Belgium uses the Alpha holder as part of the ERC project titled “CHIRAL-PRO”.The project is aimed at understanding how chiral structures on nanoparticles may reveal applications in biosensing and metamaterials. Thanks to Gert Dubont for the video, and to Marta Amor and Robin Girod for the data.
